Morse Code Bracelets and Tattoos

A hidden message only you can read, as long as the code is right. How to translate it, space it and check it before it is permanent.

To put a word in Morse code on a bracelet or tattoo, translate it letter by letter, then make the gap between letters clearly bigger than the gap between dots and dashes, and the gap between words bigger again. Check the finished design by typing it back into a Morse code translator before you order or ink anything.

Step 1: Translate your word

Type the word, name or date into the Morse code translator. It follows International Morse Code, the standard used everywhere today. Copy the result exactly, including the spaces and the / that marks a new word.

Popular choices, all checked with the translator:

Word Morse code Listen
LOVE .-.. --- ...- .
ILY (I love you) .. .-.. -.--
MOM -- --- --
DAD -.. .- -..
FAMILY ..-. .- -- .. .-.. -.--
ALWAYS .- .-.. .-- .- -.-- ...
HOPE .... --- .--. .
BREATHE -... .-. . .- - .... .
STRENGTH ... - .-. . -. --. - ....

For a full phrase, see I love you in Morse code, which also covers shorter versions that fit on small jewellery.

Step 2: Get the spacing right

This is where most Morse jewellery and tattoos go wrong. In Morse code, spacing is part of the message. The same dots and dashes can spell different words depending on where the gaps are:

Written with gaps Reads as Written without gaps Reads as
. . EE .. I
. - ET .- A
- . TE -. N
. . . EEE ... S

So a design needs three sizes of space:

  1. Inside a letter: the smallest gap, between the dots and dashes of one letter.
  2. Between letters: a clearly bigger gap, about three times the small one.
  3. Between words: the biggest gap, about seven times the small one, or a symbol such as a slash, a heart or a different bead.

On a bracelet, this usually means small spacer beads inside a letter, a larger or different-coloured bead between letters, and a charm or knot between words. On a tattoo, ask the artist to keep the letter gaps visibly wider, and check the stencil before they start.

Step 3: Names, dates and symbols

Names work letter by letter, just like words. EMMA is . -- -- .- and LIAM is .-.. .. .- --. Short names fit best on rings and narrow bracelets.

Numbers in Morse code are always five signals long, which makes dates long. The year 2026 is ..--- ----- ..--- -..... A full date with full stops, 12.05.2026, needs 52 dots and dashes. For a small piece, consider just the year, or the day and month. The Morse code numbers page explains the pattern.

Symbols: the ampersand (&) is .-..., so "JANE & TOM" is .--- .- -. . / .-... / - --- --. Emoji and most other symbols have no Morse code at all. The translator lists any character it cannot convert, so you will know before you order.

Step 4: Check it before it is permanent

Before you buy jewellery or book a tattoo:

  • Type the design back in. Copy the dots and dashes exactly as they appear on the product photo or stencil, with the same gaps, and paste them into the translator in Morse → Text mode. If the word that comes back is not your word, the spacing is wrong.
  • Count the signals. Count the dots and dashes on the design and compare them with the translator's output. A missing dot can change a letter: .... is H, but ... is S.
  • Check the direction. Decide which end is the start. On a bracelet the message usually reads left to right when worn on the wrist facing you.
  • Ask for a proof. Good jewellery makers and tattoo artists will show you a drawing first. Check it the same way.

Ideas that work well in Morse code

  • One meaningful word: HOPE, BREATHE, BRAVE, HOME.
  • Initials or short names of children, partners or parents.
  • A shared code between two people, such as ILY or a date.
  • Coordinates or a short phrase, if the piece is long enough. Remember that numbers take more space than letters.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most popular word in Morse code jewellery?

Short words of love and strength are the most common: LOVE, ILY, MOM, HOPE and names. Short words fit small pieces and stay easy to read.

How do you show a space between words in a Morse code tattoo?

Use a gap that is clearly larger than the gap between letters, or a separator symbol such as a slash. Translators, including ours, write the word space as /.

Are Morse code bracelets accurate?

Many are, but some sellers leave out letter gaps or use the wrong code for a letter. Always check the product photo by typing the pattern back into a Morse code translator.

Does Morse code have lowercase letters?

No. Morse code has no capital or lowercase letters, so "love" and "LOVE" are the same code.
