How to say hello in Morse code
You can send hello in any form that can be short or long:
- Sound. Four quick beeps, a pause, one beep, a pause, a long-short-short pair twice, then three long beeps.
- Light. Flash a torch or phone light in the same pattern. Keep a dash three times as long as a dot.
- Tapping. Short taps for dots and slower ones for dashes. Try the tapper to see your letters appear.
- Blinking. See how to blink Morse code.
Keep the gaps right. A pause of one dot separates the beeps inside a letter, three dots separate letters and seven separate words. Without the pauses the message runs together into one meaningless sound.

The comma is --..-- and the exclamation mark is -.-.--. You will find working code that prints Hello World in Morse code in several languages on the programming examples page.
What radio operators say instead
Amateur radio operators rarely send the word "hello". They call by sending CQ, -.-. --.-, which means "calling any station", followed by DE (from) and their call sign. When they answer, they often greet with GM, GA or GE for good morning, good afternoon and good evening. See common phrases for more.
