Hi in Morse Code

The shortest greeting in Morse code, what it sounds like, and the surprising thing it means on the radio.

Hi in Morse code is .... ..: H is four dots and I is two dots. Every beep is short, so "hi" is one of the fastest and easiest messages you can send.

Hi letter by letter

Letter Morse code Said aloud
H .... di-di-di-dit
I .. di-dit

There are no dashes at all, only six short beeps with a pause of three dots between the letters. At 20 words per minute the whole greeting lasts under a second. At 5 words per minute, a slow learner speed, it takes about three seconds.

How to say hi in Morse code

The pattern is short, so mistakes are about spacing, not about the letters. If you leave out the pause, six dots run together and can be read as many different things: four dots and two dots could be H and I, but also S and S, or six separate Es. The pause between the H and the I is what makes it "hi".

Ways to send it:

  • Sound or light: four fast beeps or flashes, a pause, two more.
  • Tapping: six quick taps with one slightly longer pause after the fourth. The tapper shows the letters as you tap.
  • Blinking: quick, light blinks. See how to blink Morse code.

What HI means on the radio

On the amateur radio bands, operators who send Morse code (called CW) use HI to mean something unexpected: laughter. They often send it twice as HI HI, the way you might type "haha". It is meant as the sound of a chuckle, not as a greeting, and it is part of the traditional short-hand used in CW conversations. If someone sends you HI HI after a joke, they are laughing.

That makes plain "hi" a slightly awkward greeting on the air. Operators more often say GM, GA or GE (good morning, afternoon, evening) or send a call sign, and wait for a reply.
